After completion of this teleconference, participants will be able to identify:
- How some core therapeutic techniques used in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (e.g., metaphor use and drawing distinctions between descriptive and evaluative language) are directly indicated by and firmly rooted in Relational Frame Theory.
- The role that context plays in facilitating relational responding—and how strategically changing the context within which relational responding occurs can result in cognitive defusion.
- Reasons why relational responding often results in an enhancement of human suffering.

Blackledge received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2004, after studying under Dr. Steven Hayes, ACT's primary developer. He has published over a dozen journal articles and book chapters on ACT and Relational Frame Theory, is releasing an edited book on ACT later this year, and has conducted ACT training workshops in the US, Australia, and Ireland. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Morehead State University.
If possible, J.T. encourages you to do the RFT Tutorial before listening. Other readings you may want prior to listening are J.T. Blackledge's 2003 article An Introduction to Relational Frame Theory, and the "RFT for Clinicians" article, attached below. I think this file is corrupted -- it stops midway through when run on Quicktime. When downloaded, it's size is 5.8 Mb, not the 10.75 Mb as noted above.
I think the talk is very high quality. Having the powerpoints to follow along is also helpful.
RFT and framing in multilingual context
Studying relational framing in a multilingual context could be a rich domain of discovery for RFT. Are there any study on this subject?
Indeed, being in contact with subtilities of different languages and juggling with foreign words might be a fertile context to produce flexibility and consciousness of arbitrary nature of words.
As an anecdote, my father's requisite for education was to send his daughter every summer to a different country in the world. Travelling is a great experience of changing context and seing the arbitrary all around. Self-as-context being the only solid ground in common, self as concept changing content constantly all the time.
As a child, I was early aware of this distinction and I think it might reduce the impact of verbal rule governed behaviors with more freedom or space inside being less attached to words.
Writing now in english, I am aware that choosing those words will evoke different impressions on reader even if it is english language produced in a french mother tongue person with spanish influences.
I wonder if RFT studies left the native soil to explore this adventurous path....?
