ACT Therapy

In practicing ACT and incorporating its precursor RFT I encounter one question: does cognitive defusion include identifying the core thoughts, feelings, or beliefs which contributed to the current behavior? Many of the people I encounter in my practice of ACT are victims of real or perceived childhood abuse. In working at "unwinding" their fused cognitive processes childhood issues invariably come up. . I have been using derived relational responses from those situations to facilitate understanding of current learned behaviors. Any thoughts or differing perspectives to this approach are appreciated.
