How to for newbies
Printer-friendly versionSend to friend
How about adding a link under the features section for a section on how to use the site, particularly on how to add new content. Could it be made interactive so that we could add recommendations as we learn how to use the site in new and exciting ways? Sort of a living FAQ?
By the way, Eric should get big kudos on constructing this website. I tried to work some in drupal and couldn't get much past loading the basic website on my webpage. The site is truly fantastalicious!

just hard to find
Recently I've been doing a fair amount of surfing on these type of websites that depend alot on the community to build them, like the one at Drupal for example, and have found that its often difficult to figure your way around at first. Even though I know you are supposed to look in the FAQ, I still find it hard and I'm fairly techologically savvy. I imagine that there are a number of others who would not think to look in the FAQ. And even then, the FAQs for newbies are inadequate or nonexistent, IMHO. They could usefully contain general information on what the purpose of the site is, how one participates in the community, why one would want to do so, etc.
It has always seemed to me that a guide for entering the community for new folks would really help make the transition easier and make the site more friendly for others. I'm interested in how we can create more doorways into the community. I'd be willing to do some work on maintaining such a feature if a link were in a prominent place that new folks could find easily. Not sure how these kinds of decisions get made here at context central.
let's do it
I think a guide for those entering the community would be great. I could create a link to it from the home page and under the Features menu. What should the link and section be called? Community Orientation? Site Basics? Welcome Section? How-To?
Hmmm
I'd vote for new user welcome or visitor welcome (probably the latter) or how about "visitor guide" or "new user guide"? I think I like those last two the best, and if I had to decide myself I'd go with "new user guide". And maybe have it listed just under What's new? Anyone else have opinions? There could easily be links in that section that would direct them back to particular portions of the FAQ for more detailed info, in addition to what was on that page. I could work on this a bit, if i can get some direction on how to move ahead.
it is done
Okey-doke, I created a "New User Guide" link and basic page for you. You should be able to click on the page and then click the "Edit" tab to work with as you wish. You can also click the "add child page" link at the bottom to add additional pages/sections/etc.
Others are welcome to add pages to the "New User Guide" or any other section of the site, too!
Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help out with this section. I appreciate your taking the time to work on it.
well...
There is a FAQ section that covers how to add content a little bit. It, like virtually every other section of the site, is a "living" document...any ACBS member can add questions, comments, or whatever to it! I'm happy to create a special "how-to" section under Features, though, if folks seem to think that would be useful. In the meanwhile, please check out the [[Website FAQ]] for some of this info..
