ACT in Practice: 2 day workshop to learn how to use ACT (Sydney)

Sep 25 2009 - 9:00am
Sep 26 2009 - 5:00pm

This two day workshop will incorporate a mix of didactic and experiential learning. It is designed to help participants learn to use the techniques of ACT. Clinicians brand new to ACT as well as those who have a basic understanding are welcome to attend. Participants can expect: a brief look at the evidence for ACT, lecture material on the core processes, as well as a range of techniques to learn these processes (including video, role‐play, case examples, mindfulness practice and the use of several key ACT metaphors and other exercises). Participants will be encouraged to experience ACT (to the degree that they are willing) rather than just hear about it.

As Louise comes from a strong CBT background she will provide opportunities to explore how ACT is both similar to and different from CBT. Hopefully participants will discover that many of their existing skills can be readily integrated into an ACT framework if desired. Handouts will be provided to facilitate skills acquisition and to be potentially used in clinical practice.

Louise Shepherd is a clinical psychologist with over 10 years experience in a variety of settings covering public and private hospitals, mental and physical health. She has worked with individuals and groups throughout her career. Her training at the University of Sydney was very much based in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with a strong background in treating anxiety and mood disorders. In recent years she has moved to using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) which she uses both in her private practice and in her role at the UNSW Counselling Service. She has trained extensively in ACT both here and overseas. Since 2006 she has been involved in running ACT workshops for university students addressing anxiety and depression. Louise is currently serving on the board of the Australian, New Zealand and South Pacific Chapter of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science.
