ACT with Trauma Memories: A 4-Session Protocol
Through over ten thousand hours of using ACT with Trauma Memories, Drs. Polk and Hambright have developed ACT as a client-friendly way of getting at some of the components of Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy for PTSD.
Most clients will not do PE, no matter how much you sell them on the idea. (We tried hard to sell PE.)
However, essentially every PTSD client will engage in this ACT approach to exposure.
The core of the protocol is done across four-sessions. Then additional follow up sessions are done as needed.
1. Noticing the difference between 5-Senses and Mental Experiencing.
2. Noticing the moving Away and the costs of moving away. (The unworkable change agenda).
3. Noticing moving Toward (Valued and Committed Actions).
4. Sorting and Blending (Sorting trauma stories and Blending in the present moment).
Dr. Polk will compare and contrast this ACT approach with the PE approach.
